Perhaps Italy’s most prestigious wine region, Piedmont - meaning “foot of the mountain” in Italian - is located in northwestern Italy and is so named for its proximity to the Alps, which surround the region on three sides. Piedmont is home to Barolo and Barbaresco, often referred to as the King and Queen of Italian wines; this regal pair reigns supreme over Piedmont’s lofty, fog cloaked hills. Barolo and Barbaresco are made solely from the slow-ripening Nebbiolo varietal, named for the nebbia (“fog”) that blankets the region in the autumn months, giving way to the characteristic intensity and complexity of these wines. These noble wines are typically age-worthy and compliment the region’s rich cuisine perfectly. Other notable red Piedmont varietals include Barbera and Dolcetto. Known to be fruit-forward, Barbera can be consumed young and is very versatile. Dolcetto is a dry wine that tends to offer lighter red fruit components and moderate tannin levels.
